Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at El Paso High School.
EDUCATION BACKGROUND
My name is Xavier Miranda, and I am entering my 30th year of teaching. I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Secondary Education from Lubbock Christian University in 1986, and my Master’s of Education in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Washington in 2001.
PROFESSIONAL TEACHING CAREER
1987-1990: I started my teaching career at Jefferson High School in El Paso, TX, of which I am an alumnus. I taught Language Arts, and served as the Junior Varsity coach for the Boys Basketball team for three years.
1990-1993: I was fortunate to be part of the faculty who opened up Littlerock High School in Littlerock, California, and served as a Language Arts teacher, Student Council advisor, Junior Varsity coach for the Boys Basketball team, and as an assistant coach for the Girls Varsity Softball team.
1993-2003: I moved to Port Orchard, WA and taught one year at Marcus Whitman Junior High School, serving as a Language Arts teacher and 7th grade Boys Basketball team. Upon the completion of my first year there, I moved up the street to South Kitsap High School, and served as a Language Arts teacher, and Junior Varsity Boys Basketball coach. After 10 years there, I served as a General Education teacher in the Suquamish Indian Tribe School, gleaning cultural and environmental insights that had a deep influence on my career as an educator.
2003-Present: In 2003, I came back to my hometown of El Paso, and accepted a Social Studies, Language Arts, and English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching assignment at Chapin High School. After three years in Northeast El Paso, I moved to Coronado High on the West Side, and served one year as a Language Arts and ESL teacher, and then 10 years as Social Studies teacher in the newly formed Freshman Academy. Additionally, I served as sponsor for the Coronado High School Chess Team, Environmental Club, and Generation On sponsor. Now, I get to be part of El Paso High School’s faculty, and serve as the Alternative Education Classroom teacher.
I have also served as an adjunct instructor in the College of Education at UTEP, having taught an insightful senior-level course entitled Multicultural Education in Secondary Schools. Additionally, I served 10 years as an adjunct at El Paso Community College, teaching a required Texas University System course entitled, Education 1300, Mastering Academic Excellence.
COMMUNITY ADVOCACY
As a proud Chuqueño, I have been involved in various community grassroots efforts in upholding social justice issues such as, immigration reform, environmental and healthcare advocacy, labor and trade policy reform, and of course, equity in education. Many of these endeavors have been integrated in my teaching, hoping to provide educational experiences that promote civic and community engagement for my students and colleagues.
